Traffic, formed in Birmingham in April 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason, were one of the most inventive British bands of their era. Emerging from the psychedelic late ’60s, they blended rock with folk, jazz, blues and world influences, creating a sound that was both exploratory and distinctly English. Guided by Winwood’s soulful voice and Capaldi’s thoughtful lyrics, Traffic favoured atmosphere, improvisation and musical freedom. Early hits like Paper Sun and Hole in My Shoe introduced their experimental spirit, while Dear Mr. Fantasy, John Barleycorn Must Die and The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys cemented their reputation for quietly stretching rock’s boundaries. Though they disbanded in 1974, Traffic’s influence endured, bridging psychedelia, progressive rock and roots music. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, their legacy remains one of musical curiosity, craftsmanship and an enduring singularity.
