NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory
Get ready for a new era in astronomy and astrophysics with NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory! For the first ten years of operations, Rubin Observatory will produce the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), using the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope and the 3200-megapixel LSST Camera. The light-collecting power of this uniquely-designed telescope, combined with the sensitivity of the camera (the largest ever built for astronomy and astrophysics), will produce images revealing distant objects that are about 20 million times fainter than those visible with the unaided eye. Full science operations began in June 2026. NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory is jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Rubin Observatory is a joint Program of NSF NOIRLab and DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Learn more at www.rubinobservatory.org
